I was travelling from Khorugh (Хоруғ) to Ishkoshim (Ишкошим) in
Tajikistan along the border, which is the Panj River. Khorugh is the capital of
the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) in Tajikistan. It lies about
2,200 metres (7,200 ft) above sea level.
I had the good luck to see a graveyard next to the border, not very far
away from Ishkoshim. As usual for Muslim countries, the body is buried shortly
after death. The graves are very simple with less adornment than in other
countries. Kirgizstan is quite different in this aspect. Most graves you see
are brick or concrete walled. The head of the body lies northwards with the
eyes turned to Mecca. On some of these graves one can see teapots. I have no idea, what this custom means.
